Hip Movements

This combination enables practise in generating power by the use of the hips while using all the basic stances. It stresses fast side movement (like the last two moves in Geki Sai Dai Ichi), to switch position and requires the use of the covering hand to initiate a block.

It can be taught first as a series of ippon kumites. Here the attacker should switch his kamae every time he moves back or two attackers can also be used. R = right, L = left, ZKD = zen kutsu datchi.

Move Attacker (A) Defender (D)
Kamae L ZKD, Chudan Kamae Heiko Dachi No Kamae
1 Advance to R ZKD, R oi tsuki to Jodan Pivot R leg back 90º to heiko datchi, L hand shotei uke. Slide L foot towards A, twist powerfully into ZKD, R gyaku tsuki to Gedan.
2 Moving L leg 45º back to Shiko datchi, block with R gedan barai. Twist R and counter with L gyaku tsuki jodan. Move L foot behind R. spinning 90º, and block R hand Shotei uke. Slide R foot towards A, twist powerfully into R ZKD with L gyaku tsuki to gedan.
3 Moving R leg, slide to shiko datchi, blocking with L gedan barai. Twist L and counter with R gyaku tsuki to jodan. After a small move away with the R foot if necessary for distance, pull L leg across to L neko datchi, L jodan uke. Slide L foot towards A, twist powerfully into han ZKD with R gyaku tsuki to chudan.
4 Pull R leg across in front to R sanchin datchi, facing original front, with R chudan uke (use covering hand to deflect initially). Slide R foot towards D, to han ZKD with L gyaku tsuki to jodan. Slide across, moving L foot first, then pull R foot in to R neko datchi with R jodan uke. Slide R foot towards A, twist powerfully into han ZKD with L gyaku tsuki to chudan.
5 Slide to the right into L sanchin datchi, with a part turn to L, and block L chudan uke (using covering hand initially). Slide L foot towards D, to han ZKD with R gyaku tsuki to gedan. Pull rear hip up, moving L leg to heiko datchi, while blocking down and back with L shotei barai. Move L leg towards A, turning into L sanchin datchi. Hold A’s R arm and pull R hip up with R jodan age tsuki. Move away to L han ZKD kamae.
